Collages

Objectives/Student Outcomes: 

Students will be able identify the use of amorphous (organic) and geometric shapes in their artworks. Demonstrate how to cut and glue a variety of shapes from various colors and sizes to Create interesting collages including negative and positive shapes with patterns. And, to show ways that artists use these media to express their ideas and feelings.

Materials/Supplies:   

Construction paper, decorative paper, fabric, pencils, crayons, markers, white school glue or glue stick, scissors, cutters.

Essential Question(s): 

Where is art?  You can find art in many places and events. Just look, remember and imagine. â€‹â€‹â€‹

​Introduction/Background: 

Look at collages by Henri Matisse and paintings by Stuart Davis. Optionally, read the book Henri Matisse: Drawing with scissors.  

Discuss the meaning and how to identify organic and geometric shapes, practice drawing and cutting shapes. 

Art is all over the world. It is far away and nearby. It is on the land and in the sky.  

Look around you. See the lines, shapes, colors and textures. Remember something beautiful. Imagine things you have never seen.
